Try Higher: The Call to Every College Student $16.99 “College is a major opportunity for trying new things: new friends, new courses, new ideas, and even a new you. College is the chance to stand up, branch out, and discover your unique purpose. But what new things will you try in college? And what happens to all the things you’ve learned along the way about yourself, your values, and your faith? Will you just accept whatever college life asks you to try? Or will you accept the call to try higher? “I wish I had read Try Higher before I went to college. In fact, I wish every young person today would read it, study it, and apply the truths to their lives. It will help students avoid the common pitfalls of college and also experience tremendous success in their social, academic and spiritual lives. It’s a must-read.” – Sean McDowell, speaker, teacher, and co-author of Apologetics for a New Generation “What a great concept for every college student to read Trevor Francis challenges college students to go beyond just wondering “What should I do with my life?” and ask the better question ‘What does God want me to do with my life?’” – Dr. Joe White, President of Kanakuk Kamps “There are very few books that speak to the struggles faced during college. Trevor has helped fill this chasm in a way that is not only practical, but also gives spiritually mature advice. In my opinion, the more students that get a hold of this and read it the better ” – Chuck Bomar (CollegeLeader.org), author of College Ministry 101: A Guide to Working With 18-25 Year Olds “Try Higher beautifully blends practicality and spirituality for the college student. This should be required reading for every student, and recommended reading for everyone else – Dr. Tom Blackaby, author of The Family God Uses, Encounters with God Daily Bible, co-author The Man God Uses, International Director, Blackaby Ministries International, t.blackaby@blackaby.org Try Higher is a must-read for every high school student preparing for college and every college student in the midst of their experience. It integrates all aspects of the college experience and calls every college student to spiritual leadership. Try Higher will help you gain a better understanding of how God can truly be a part of your college experience and actually improve it. It grants a far-reaching perspective about academics, relationships, social involvement, as well as the spiritual choices you can make to help you get the best from the new things you do try. It’s the “go-to” guide book for college. About the Author: Trevor Francis, Ed.D., is an award-winning academic counselor, speaker, and co-founder, with his wife Nicole, of Higher International, a ministry promoting spiritual leadership on college campuses. You can visit their website at www.tryhigher.com.” |

Wow $22.96 There are only a handful of double albums that really need to be their length, and Wow doesn’t really make the club. The band’s core sound is laconic alternative rock, with guitar riffs stripped of commercial sheen, but supported by piano and synthesizers |

No Wow $22.94 It’s hard to believe that the Kills could sound even darker, tighter, and more stripped-down than they did on Keep on Your Mean Side, but somehow they managed it: No Wow is one of the most highly concentrated rock albums in a long, long time. In fact, its tight focus and barely relenting intensity make Keep on Your Mean Side’s more traditional ebb and flow feel downright slack. The band’s throbbing guitars, to-the-point rhythms, and sexy, dangerous lyrics have been simmered and tempered down to their barest essences, so much so that No Wow often feels like a stark, stylized caricature of rock. Less is usually more for the Kills, though, and they sound more powerful, more confident, and more distinctive here than they did on their debut. “No Wow” itself is a fantastic opener, a powerful statement of intent and of curdled but still compelling love (or lust), the likes of which hasn’t been heard since Rid of Me’s title track. From there, the album doesn’t let up until the sweetly narcotized “I Hate the Way You Love, Pt. 2.” Most of No Wow feels like monochromatic variations on the same sounds and themes — monochromatic, but not monotonous. Wisely, the Kills have chosen to let their drum machine sound like a drum machine, giving songs like “Love Is a Deserter” a skeletal clatter for a backbone, and others, such as “The Good Ones” and “Sweet Cloud,” a piston-like thrust. The magnificently taut “Dead Road 7″ adds shades of menacing, mysterious country/blues storytelling to the band’s songwriting, a direction they should pursue more. At times, No Wow can feel a little too compressed and high-contrast for its own good — the album downplays the poppier moments that balanced Keep on Your Mean Side’s onslaughts. However, since there are so few soft, slow songs here, they’re thrown into even sharper relief. “Rodeo Town” is one of the loveliest, and grittiest, ballads that the band has written, and “Ticket Man” ends the album on a hypnotic, reflective note. And though Hotel’s vocals are also downplayed (and missed), it has to be said that VV does a compelling job of handling the lioness’ share of the singing. A tight, mean set of songs, No Wow feels like a fight going on in a closet — there’s no room for punches to swing, but all of the shoving and grappling makes just as big an impact. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi Performers: Alison Mosshart – Vocals |

Wow! $10.38 Bananarama followed up their hit-laden True Confessions, which spawned their international chart-topping version of “Venus,” with 1987′s Wow! True Confessions witnessed the emerging role of Stock, Aitken & Waterman as the trio’s producers — Wow! was wholly assembled by the hitmaking team, which was also responsible for hits by Rick Astley, Kylie Minogue, Dead or Alive, Donna Summer, and countless others. This album is, therefore, a straightforward 1980s dance set, with several songs that went on to become international hits. The only track from this set to make the U.S. Top Ten was “I Heard a Rumour,” a sassy, joyous single just as infectious today as when first released. Also included is the sleek, lip-smackin’ disco hit “I Can’t Help It,” the engaging, European chart-topper “Love in the First Degree,” the single “I Want You Back,” and an extended mix of their version of the Supremes’ “Nathan Jones.” Some of the non-hits pale in comparison to the singles, among those the dated, 12″ version of “Some Girls”; the 12″ version of “Strike It Rich,” which, at some points, resembles an inferior version of “I Can’t Help It”; and “Bad for Me,” which unintentionally highlights the trio’s vocal limitations. Nonetheless, the singles were quite intoxicating, and this hard-to-find set is sure to please fans of Bananarama, or any fans of the Stock, Aitken & Waterman sound, which ruled the airwaves and nightclubs in the mid- to late ’80s. ~ Jose F. Promis, Rovi Performers: Ian Curnow – Fairlight; John O’Hara – Keyboards; Matt Aitken – Vocals (Background), Guitar, Keyboards; Mike Stock – Vocals (Background), Keyboards; Pete Waterman – Drums; Waterman – Drums |
